The couple had agreed to marry each other despite having not met face to face. This is not uncommon in some strict Muslim social groups, who believe no male but a father or brother may see an unmarried woman’s face. Typically such veiled marriages are arranged by the two families, and couple meets only briefly ahead of time, veiled of course, or not at all. Sometimes the groom’s mother is allowed to check out the bride ahead of time, but that’s about as far as it goes.
In this case, the groom’s mom seems to have let the team down, because as the bride removed her veil and smiled for the camera, her new husband leapt to his feet in utter disgust. “You are not the girl I want to marry,” he declared. “You are not the one I had imagined. I am sorry, but I divorce you.”
