The 28-year-old is arguably the best player ever to have graced the football pitch which has earned him an unprecedented Ballon d’Or five times, two more than his closest rival Cristiano Ronaldo.
However, the Argentine is seen to be struggling in 2016, although he has shown glimpses of how ‘destructive’ he could be in front of goal, Messi has not been so ‘alienic’ as he used to be and football lovers around the world have continued to raise questions;
should Messi leave Barcelona?
Below are five reasons Messi must move on
1. Gone past his peak period?: The 28-year-old has been exceptional for more than a decade now. He has been named among the best three players for the past nine consecutive years, and winning it five times.
Messi’s games has really dwindled and failed to live up to expectation at home in the reverse La liga fixture of the El Clasico as 10-man Real Madrid ran away with a 1 – 2 victory.

The Argentine was also totally out of action on Wednesday April 13, when Atletico Madrid defeated Barcelona 2 – 0to ensure the Catalan Giants crash out of the Champions League. It is obvious the player is beginning to struggle with the Camp Nou side, and that could be a signal that his time is up at Barcelona.
2. Presence of Neymar and Suarez: Suarez has shown great potentials. Arguably, he is currently the best striker on the planet at the moment. His sensational strike against Arsenal in the Champions League round of 16 will not be forgotten so soon.
His presence in the Barcelona attack has reduced the burden of Messi. The combination of Messi, Neymar and Suarez (MSN as the trio are popularly called) has delegated attacking activities at the club, and on several occasions, Suarez and Neymar have stolen the show. An indication Messi is now dispensable at the club.
3. Messi needs fresh challenges: Messi has played his entire career game at Barcelona. He probably needs new challenges, since he has won ‘everything’ with Barcelona.
Although he had a six-year youth career back home with Newell’s Old Boys between 1996 and 2000.
Messi has been a Barcelona for about 16years, as he joined the squad in the year 2000. He started playing with the first team in 2004.
4. Ever-present Spanish tax problems: Messi and his father Jorge face are still under trial over an alleged £3.1million tax fraud relating to image rights deals.
Although, there are reports that Spain’s public prosecutor has dropped tax fraud charges against Lionel Messi, the Barcelona star’s father, Jorge, will reportedly stand trial over the allegations, which relate to the Argentina international’s image rights.
A top player in Barcelona disclosed in 2015 that Messi is having difficult time in Spain in that regard.
5. Age: By June 24, 2016, the Argentina striker will be 29 years old. Age could really be telling on the current world best player.
